Traditional Watercolor Technique

Our session will begin with an introduction to and demonstration of traditional watercolor techniques. Subsequent weeks will include composition, the use of color and value to create form in a still life and depth in a landscape. Class will be modified to accommodate students of all levels and is appropriate for true beginners and artists who have taken previous classes.

SuppliesSketch pad, kneaded gum eraser, soft pencil (HB or softer), pencil sharpener, good student grade cold press watercolor paper pad, paper towels, a good sized water container, watercolor box or watercolor pallet to use with tube paints.BrushesAlways get the best brushes you can afford, they really make a difference. Recommended bush size: round #3, 6, 8, 12; flat 1/2”, 1”My personal favorites are Sax Arts & Crafts True Flow Golden TalonPaintThe quality of the paints you purchase will depend on your experience level. Beginners who are doing watercolor for the first time can get by with a good quality half pan set. Intermediate students are okay with student grade paints. More advanced students will like professional grade. I use Winsor & Newton tube watercolors.All you need is red, yellow and blue so don’t worry about getting the colors listed below if you have different ones already. The list is just a suggestion of basic colors.WatercolorsI like Winsor & Newton tube watercolors.
